2010 Girls Tennis Recaps

Sat, 9/11 - Blair 4 Kent - Place 1
The girls' varsity tennis team (1-0) opened their season with an exciting win 4-1 at Kent Place. Sam Light earned the team's first win at #1 singles, defeating her opponent 6-2, 6-0. Just after, Isabel Peil won at #3 singles 6-1, 6-1. At 2-1, Kelsey Vella pulled through to earn the team's third match, defeating her opponent in a close match 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. The day ended with an exciting doubles win for Samantha Beck and Deanna Inez at 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 (4).

Sat, 9/18 - Blair 4 - Villa Walsh 1
Blair tennis (2-0) walked away Saturday with their second season win at Villa Walsh. Each player showed tremendous effort throughout. Deanna Inez and Samantha Beck secured the first win at #1 doubles, winning 6-0, 6-4. Soon after, Sam Light, Kelsey Vella, and Isabel Peil won in straight sets at #1, #2, and #3 singles, respectively. Stephanie Gorman and Torera Fagbenle fell just short in a close three set match. Blair has its home opener Monday, September 20th, against Princeton Day School.

Mon, 9/20 - Blair 4 - PDS 1
The Bucs (3-0) earned a well-deserved home victory against Princeton Day School. Kelsey Vella and Isabel Peil won in straight sets at #2 and #3 singles, respectively. Steph Gorman and Torera Fagbenle secured the match at #2 doubles with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Sam Beck and Deanna Inez won another close match at #1 doubles 6-4, 5-7, 6-1. Sam Light dropped a tight match at #1 singles, 2-6, 6-2, 3-6. The team will travel to Peddie on Wednesday.

Wed, 9/22 - Blair 5 - Peddie 0
Off to a great start, the Girls' Varsity tennis team traveled to Peddie on Wednesday, improving their record to 4-0. The girls swept all of the matches, all in straight sets. Sam Light and Isabel Peil each dropped only one game, both winning 6-1, 6-0. The team's next test is Rutgers Prep on Tuesday, September 28th.

Wed, 10/6 - Blair 5 - Stuart 0
On Wednesday, the Bucs travelled to Mercer County Park to take on Stuart Country Day School. The entire lineup swept each match 6-0, 6-0, earning a 5-0 team win. The Bucs remain undefeated for the season (6-0). The girls' tennis team will travel to Mercersburg Friday for a MAPL match.

Fri, 10/8 - Mercersburg
On Friday, the Bucs made the long trip to Mercersburg for their first MAPL match of the season. The ladies started out strong, sweeping all of the doubles. Kelsey Vella teamed up with Sam Light to earn a solid 8-2 win at #1 doubles. The singles matches were exciting across the board. At #1 singles, Sam Light won a close match with Nikki Wolny 6-4, 6-4. Sam Beck lost a close match at #4 singles. She opened with an easy first set 6-1 win, but ended up losing a close super tiebreaker for the third set. The Bucs are now 7-0 and will take on Walkill at home Monday.

Mon, 10/11 - Wallkill
The Bucs hosted Walkill Monday for their second home match. Each player remained very strong on the court, winning each match in straight sets. The Bucs will host Sparta at home on Wednesday.

Wed, 10/13 - Sparta
On Wednesday, the Bucs hosted Sparta. Kelsey Vella earned the team's first win at #2 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0. The doubles matches were strong. Sam Beck and Deanna Inez won 6-1, 6-1 at #1 doubles. Steph Gorman and Torera Fagbenle held strong with a 6-1, 6-2 win at #2 doubles. Sam Light ended the match with a solid 6-1, 6-4 win at #1 singles. The Bucs are now 9-0 and will host the Hun School at home on Saturday at 1:00 pm.

Sat, 10/16 - Hun School - Blair 7 - Hun 0
The Bucs (10-0) hosted Hun on Saturday and, with the victory, remain undefeated for the season. In singles, #1 Sam Light, #2 Kelsey Vella, and #5 Torera Fagbenle all won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Isabel Peil, Sam Beck, and Deanna Inez also won in convincing fashion. In doubles, #1 Vella and Light (8-0), #2 Peil and Fagbenle (8-2), and #3 Beck and Inez (8-0) made quick work of the Hun squad.

Coach Brantley notes, "All of the girls new to the singles lineup (Sam Beck, Torera, Deanna) are doing really well, as are the new doubles teams. Varsity tennis will face Lenape Valley at home on Wednesday.

Sat, 10/23 - Blair 5 - Lawrenceville 1
Blair tennis continued its undefeated season at MAPL rival, Lawrenceville, besting the Larries in convincing fashion.

At #1 singles, Sam Light won 6-2, 6-3 while #2 and #3 singles Kelsey Vella and Isabel Peil won 6-0, 6-0. Rounding out the singles victories were #4 singles Sam Beck (6-3, 6-1) and #6 singles Torera Fagbenle (6-2, 6-1). At #5 singles, Deanna Inex lost a hard-fought match (6-2, 6-3). In doubles, Blair swept Lawrenceville. On Sunday, Blair is back at Lawrenceville for State play.

Sam Light won against Peddie
Kelsey Vella won against Lawrenceville
Isabel Peil won against Lawrenceville

Beck/Inez won against Peddie
Gorman/Fagbenle won against Oak Knoll

Tue, 10/26 - Blair 3 -MKA 2
Blair (12-0) topped MKA on Wednesday, 3-2 sweeping in singles action. Sam Light won 6-0, 6-0, Kelsey Vella won in straight sets, and Isabel Peil won 6-2, 6-1. The doubles teams battled to close matches, but were unable to pull out a victory. Blair remains undefeated and plays in the state finals on Thursday.

10/28 - States - Girls’ Tennis Makes Blair History Books
Varsity Team Takes State Prep "A" Title

The Blair girls’ varsity tennis team took the state Prep "A" title on October 28! The Bucs competed in the NJISAA State Tournament at Pingry, where they landed the first girls’ Prep "A" tennis title in Blair’s history. Congratulations are in order, says head coach Laura Brantley, to the team and to individual champions Kelsey Vella and Isabel Peil, along with doubles champions Sam Beck and Deanna Inez. Laura added, “Sam Light and the tandem of Steph Gorman and Torera Fagbenle placed second in the tournament in close, competitive matches. The wind made for two tough matches on the doubles courts. Steph and Torera put up a good fight against a strong Lawrenceville team. Sam and Deanna started out pretty well despite the conditions. After dropping the second set, they came out incredibly strong in the third set and secured the title for the Bucs.” See the results below:
