Introduction
Blair Academys Athletic Program
The goal of the athletic program at Blair is to combine healthy, physical development with the valuable life lessons of sportsmanship, teamwork and fair play. Every Blair student is required to take part in some form of athletics, either through interscholastic competitions or a sports alternative. The many options include swimming, golf, weight lifting, outdoor skills, and an expanding variety of aerobics and dance activities. Crew was introduced in 1997, and Blair oarsmen row on nearby Swartswood Lake in both the fall and spring. Ice hockey is now available for both boys and girls.
Our athletic facilities are exceptional. Indoors, the swimming pool boasts state-of-the-art-timing devices and accommodates a boys and girls swim team and learn-to-swim and lap swimming programs. Three international squash courts, and newly renovated weight and training rooms provide the framework for an array of athletic activities. Our outdoor facilities feature numerous playing fields, track, tennis courts (including nine new courts), a three-mile cross country course, and a challenging nine-hole golf course. For over a quarter of a century, Blair students have participated in the Blair-Swift Golf Exchange, which sends the best British and American school boy golfers to each others countries, every other year, as part of the prestigious, three-week tour.
Sports begin in the afternoon when the class day ends. Students and faculty reconvene in the gym or on the playing field, as most faculty members dedicate their afternoons to coaching a sport. Many students who have learned a sport at Blair go on to play at the collegiate level.

Class of ’03 Alums Excel in NCAA Crew and Track & Field
Christine Geiser ’03 was the #6 seat in Yale’s NCAA varsity eight boat in the May 27 Division I national championship race in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Her boat won their heat, their semifinal and the grand final to finish the season undefeated.
Christine proudly notes that fans may check out this article on Yale’s Eastern Sprints win at
http://yalebulldogs.cstv.com/sports/w-crew/recaps/051307aae.html; an excerpt reads, “It was a memorable day for the Yale women’s crew team at the Eastern Sprints on the Cooper River. The Bulldogs took home the Charles Willing Jr. Team trophy for overall supremacy, and the varsity eight won the Grand Final for the second time in the last three years. The varsity eight victory earns Yale the Ivy League title…It was the fifth time in school history that Yale won the varsity eight race at Sprints, which began in 1976. ‘It’s simply one of the best feelings I’ve ever had,’ said Geiser, a senior who was also in the varsity boat that won in 2005.”
Michael Kerrigan ’03, a Stroudsburg, Pa., native and Villanova senior, qualified for the NCAA Track and Field Championship Finals by finishing third in the 1,500-meter run at the NCAA East Regional qualifying meet on May 26 at the University of Florida. Mike, who has one year of eligibility remaining because he redshirted last year, ran (3:42.5, a 3:59+ mile equivalent) to qualify for the championship meet June 6-9, in Sacramento, Calif.,
Mike also set a personal best in the event, as his 3:44.11 time that he ran at Princeton in April had qualified him for the East Regional. Max Smith, a junior from Providence, won the race in 3:41.09, with junior Ben True of Dartmouth second in 3:42.00. Mike broke the four-minute mile in mid-May, running 3:59.60 at Swarthmore. |
