2011 Recaps

4/2 - Blair 5 - Gill 1
Blair baseball opened up its season on Saturday with a 5-1 victory over Gill St. Bernards. The Blair pitchers threw a combined no hitter as senior Sam Nashed shut down Gill for five scoreless innings in relief and sophomore Jake Spezial closed the door in the last. Captain Eric Peterson led the way with the bats picking up three doubles and one RBI while John Lucas also had three hits and an RBI. Paul Mascarenhas scored the winning run after he started a rally with two outs on a singled in the fourth, followed by a Lucas double and then a two run single by George Green. The Bucs have their first home game on Monday versus in-town rival North Warren.

4/4 - Blair 7 - North Warren 1
Blair tops North Warren
The Blair baseball team picked up its second win of the season by defeating North Warren H.S. by a score of 7-1. The Bucs offense jumped out to an early lead with 5 runs in the first inning which held up to the secure the home opener. Eric Peterson and Ross Danzig led the way with the bats picking five hits between them. George Green and Liam Sabino added two out RBI singles in the later innings to squash any comeback threats from North Warren. Chris Mezzanotte, John Lucas and Paul Masscarenhas also notched singles on the day.

John Lucas picked up the win on the mound pitching four scoreless innings and Andrew Green got the save with three innings of excellent relief. On Wednesday Blair opens up MAPL league play with a home game vs. Hun at 4:00.

4/6 - Blair 1 - Hun 5 (5 innings)
Blair drops MAPL opener to Hun.

The Blair baseball team lost to Hun today 5-1 in a rain shorten 5 inning game. Hun had the pressure on in each inning and then scored their first run in the 3rd on an error before adding 4 more runs in the 4th. Hun just had 3 hits on the day, but Blair pitching struggled to find the plate, walking 6 batters and hitting 3 others. Blair scratched its only run across to take an initial lead on a John Lucas RBI single in the 2nd. Max Kaplan closed out the hitting for the Bucs with a pitch hit single. Blair will travel to Lawrenceville for its next game this Saturday.

4/11 - Blair falls to Pennington, 15-13
The Blair baseball team battled back from a 6-0 deficit to take the lead late in the game, but was unable to finish the deal as Pennington scored 4 runs in extra innings to win 15-13. The Bucs had 2 opportunities to close the game out in the seventh inning, but Blair couldn't get the last out. Eric Peterson, Ross Danzig and Sam Nashed led the way for Blair at the plate. Danzig was 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and an RBI. Peterson knocked in the tying run in the bottom of the 7th and it looked as if the winning run as well, but Chris Mezzanotte was called out at home in a very close play. Tim Hettinger added a single and 2 sacrifice flies with 3 RBIs. Phil Zranchev and John Lucas picked up one single each on the day. Sam Nashed threw 4 strong innings in relief that allowed Blair to pull even in the 6th inning. Blair is now 2-2.

4/14 - Blair 19 - Rutgers Prep 21
Blair loses slug fest to Rutgers Prep
The Blair baseball team battled back from behind 5 different times during the game, but Blair was unable to hold off the Rutgers Prep offensive attack in the bottom of the 6th falling 21-19. The Bucs registered 22 hits on the day and 4 home runs at the short porch of Rutgers Prep. It was a great day for the Blair hitters, but the pitching and defense struggled. Eric Peterson and John Lucas led the offensive attack with 3 hits each and 6 RBIs. Peterson hit a grand slam in the 6th to take the lead and Lucas had two 3 run homers. Liam Sabino and Ryan Gallagher also had 3 hits each and Chris Mezzanotte, Max Kaplan, Paul Mascarenas and Ross Danzig tallied with 2 to round out the offense. Ross Danzig hit a solo home run to start the scoring in the 1st inning. Chris Mezzanotte gave the Bucs two solid innings pitched in relief. The Bucs are now 2-3 and play home against Mercersburg Friday, at 4:15pm.

4/15 - Blair 1 - Mercersburg 5
Mercersburg's ace pitcher Colin Binford shut down the Blair offense for most of day defeating the Bucs 5-1. Ross Danzig and Eric Peterson were the only two Blair hitters to come up with hits although the Bucs did hit the ball hard at times.

Jake Spezial had solid performance on the mound for Blair striking out 8 and giving up just 6 hits. The Bucs are now 2-4.

4/18 - Blair 3 - Lawrenceville 1
Bucs knock off Lawrenceville
The Blair baseball team picked up its first MAPL win of the season by defeating Lawrenceville at Lawrenceville 3-1. The game was a duel of two fine pitching efforts by Blair's Sam Nashed and Lawrenceville's Chris Harwood. Both pitchers went the distance for their teams giving up just 5 hits each. Nashed kept the Lawrenceville hitters off balance all day mixing up his pitches well.

John Lucas got the Bucs on the board in the 3rd to knot the game at one with a solo home run. Ross Danzig and Eric Peterson registered singles in the 4th which led to an RBI groundout by Chris Mezzanotte and Phil Zranchev ended the scoring with a big two out double in the 5th. Zranchev had 2 hits on the day. Blair is now 3-4 and plays at home tomorrow against Morris Knolls.

4/21 - Blair 13 - Peddie 1
Blair tops Peddie
The Blair hitters had a big day at the plate registering 14 hits on the way to 13-1 win over Peddie. The Bucs opened the game with a lead off home run by Phil Zranchev and then added 2 runs in the 2nd inning and then 5 more in both the 3rd and 4th to finish the scoring. Paul Mascarenhas led the way with 3 hits and 2 RBI. Eric Peterson had 2 hits including a 3 run homer. Liam Sabino, Tim Hettinger, and Ryan Gallagher had two hits a piece and Chris Mezzanotte added a double. John Lucas also belted grand slam in the 4th, his 4th blast of the year. On the mound, Jake Spezial pitched very well for the Bucs holding the Peddie hitters to just 2 hits while striking out 5. Blair is now 4-4 and will travel PDS on Monday.

4/25 - Blair 17 - PDS 7
Blair defeats PDS
The Blair baseball team won its third straight game by defeating PDS 17-7. The Bucs picked up 12 hits on the day as Paul Mascarenhas, Chris Mezzanotte, John Lucas and Ryan Gallagher recorded 2 each. Eric Peterson, Ross Danzig and Liam Sabino added one hit a piece along with a combined 4 RBIs. Andrew Green, George Green and Chris Mezzanotte combined to pitch 7 innings for Blair.

4/26 - Blair 2 - Pope John 10
Blair drops game to Pope John
Blair's pitcher Phil Zranchev pitched very well for the Bucs for 4 innings and and then ran out of steam allowing 4 runs in the fifth inning. Zranchev had the 5th ranked Pope John off balance up until that point, but 2 Blair errors were very costly. Ross Danzig led the Blair offense with home run and a triple. Chris Mezzanotte added 2 hits with an RBI and Eric Peterson and Ryan Gallagher recorded one hit each. Blair is now 5-5 and plays Hill on Wednesday in Pottstown.
