Back to Back MAPL Champions!
Blair Academy 63
Hun School 44
A 19-5 4th quarter advantage was the difference Sunday in Blairstown, as Blair successfully defended its MAPL crown with a 63-44 victory over the Hun School. Tournament MVP Luol Deng contributed an excellent all-around effort, registering 9 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists, and all 16 of Charlie Villanuevas points came in the second half when the Bucs pulled away. Unlike the first two meetings, which were decided by a total of 4 points, the Raiders could not stay with the Bucs the entire game, and this time guards Jason Haas and Roberto Felipe each scored 14 points, with a Felipe dunk ending the game emphatically for Blair. Hun was led by Calvin Arnold, who scored a team-high 13 points in a fine performance; however, Mingus Murray, who scored 30 points in the second contest, was slowed by an injured leg and Roberto Felipe and did not score a single point. The Raiders held the lead early in the game and trailed only by 4 at the half. Blair kicked its defense in to high gear in the second half though, with Hun scoring only 7 points in the games final ten minutes. There still remains a chance that these teams will meet for a fourth time in the upcoming NJ Prep A state tournament, but for now the Bucs can hang their second MAPL banner and prepare for what should be another exciting tournament.
