Navy SEAL Chris Fussell ’92 Speaks About the War in Iraq

Navy SEAL Chris Fussell ’92 spoke about “The War in Iraq from the Perspective of Special Operations” as part of the Society of Skeptics lecture series on March 30, 2004, in Cowan Auditorium.

Lieutenant Fussell is currently a commander of a SEAL group training in Virginia. He participated in the war and the occupation in a number of capacities, including the search for hostile individuals and groups in the back alleyways of Baghdad. Not surprisingly, he stated that the most difficult task is to gain the hearts and minds of the populace (bringing electric and water facilities on line, building schools, etc.) while also employing military force when necessary — quite a balancing act.

Lieutenant Fussell conveyed a positive assessment of our allies in the field, although he said that they are not equipped in the same fashion as the more technologically advanced American forces. Generally upbeat about our role in overthrowing Hussein, he does recognize the inherent dangers in a long-term occupation amidst a Muslim population.
