Blair Wins Home Openers

Blair Football started its 2003 campaign off on the right note defeating Worcester Academy (Mass) 28-19 in a thrilling game that went down to the final whistle. It was a big win for Blair coming off a disappointing 2002 season and beating one of the top prep programs from New England.

Blair scored on its opening drive ( 80 yards on 13 plays) with a 23 yard run by Gary Thomas. Worcester answered with a score of their own and then Blair took the lead again on a second Gary Thomas touchdown. Worcester then scored on a long pass make it 14-12 Blair at the half. The second half was even more exciting as the teams battled back and forth with each team making several big defensive plays. Early in the 3rd, Blair got its 3rd touchdown on a 5 yard run by Anthony Melillo, however; Worcester answered right back with a score of their own to start the 4th quarter making the score 21-19 Blair. Mike Gallihugh put the Bucs up by two scores with a 61 yard run with 8 minutes left, and then the Blair defense made a final stand deep in its own end to seal the win.

Halfback Gary Thomas led Blair in rushing with 130 yards on 20 carries, while Halfback Mike Gallihugh and Fullback Zach Hammond rushed for 80 and 92 yards respectively. The Defense was led by Captain John Kane who had 13 tackles and an interception. This week the Bucs host national prep power Gilman from Baltimore. Blair looks to avenge its 46-12 loss to the Greyhounds from last fall.

Boy’s soccer also beat Rutgers Prep 1-0 and the girls won 4-2 after being down at half-time 1-0. Go Bucs!
