The Blair Academy Players christened the new Robert J. Evans Open Air Theatre with the Thornton Wilder classic play “Our Town” April 28th through May 1st as part of Blair’s Spring Arts Weekend.

Set at the turn of the 20th century, the play reveals the ordinary lives of the people in the small town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, as narrated by the Stage Manager (senior Mike Spadaccini). At the center of the story are Emily Webb (senior Clair Baxter) and George Gibbs (senior Michael King), young lovers who grow up, get married, and start a family. Giving them advice through the play are their parents, Dr. and Mrs. Gibbs (played by senior Will Scott and junior Susannah Jones) and Editor and Mrs. Webb (played by senior Phil Mauriello and junior Faith Evans). When Emily dies during childbirth, she joins other members of the town who have passed on and now sit and watch the lives of those left behind unfold. Given the chance to go back and relive one day, Emily chooses one of the happiest days-her 12th birthday. Her excitement turns to disillusionment, as she sees that life was a gift savored by few.

One of the most performed plays in theatre history, “Our Town” proved a memorable performance next to Blair. The play was directed by Performing Arts Chairman Craig Evans.
