Blair Football Defeats Hun 43-16

The Blair football team traveled to Hun on Saturday and won a convincing victory over the high-powered Red Raiders, 43-16. The Bucs’ defense led the way as they stifled the Hun wide-open offense to -6 yards for most of the 1st half. At the same time, Blair’s offense was rolling, scoring 4 touchdowns and a field goal which led to a 29-0 advantage at the break.

The second half was more of the same as the Bucs scored on their first possession on a 76-yard drive to make the score 36-0. Hun scored its only points in the 4th quarter on two late touchdown runs, and Blair added another score on an Anthony Melillo 50-yard kickoff return on an on-sides kick.

It was a good day for Blair as they defeated a very strong team while playing well on both sides of the ball. Coach Stone said of the win: “This was a very big win for us. Our kids played hard all day and beat a strong club. It was a complete team effort. I think we are really starting to come together.”

Blair was led on offense by senior Mike Gallihugh who scored 3 touchdowns on 7 carries for 58 yards. Senior fullback Zach Hammond rushed for 100 yards and one score, and Gary Thomas had 95 yards on 13 carries. Coach Stone attributes the rushing success to some very solid work by the offensive line. “Our line came off the ball much better today. It was also nice to get our big man (Jeff Hanson) back, who’s been out for awhile. It certainly gave us a little charge. Whatever we do on offense starts with guys up front and always will.” Kevin Reese rounded out the scoring with a field goal and 4 out of 5 extra points.

The defense was very good as they held Hun to just 180 yards of total offense. The Bucs were led by junior defensive end Ben Kinerson who had 8 tackles and 3 sacks. Coach Stone said of Kinerson’s performance: “Ben was all over the place today. He set the tone for us from the beginning.” Senior captain John Kane had another excellent day at linebacker, recording 10 tackles. Also, junior Stewart Buck and Mike Gallihugh had an interception each. The difference in the game was Blair’s ability to put pressure on the Hun quarterback and have excellent pass coverage.

This coming Saturday, Blair welcomes Lawrenceville to town for a major showdown. The Big Red is 5-0 and defending MAPL champs, while the Bucs are 3-1. Blair must win to keep its MAPL title hopes alive. This game looks to be one of the best match-ups of the year. Game time is 2:00 pm.
