Blair Football Defeats Lawrenceville 16-6

10/18/03
The Blair football team defeated Lawrenceville 16-6 on Saturday to keep its MAPL championship hopes alive. It was a battle of two outstanding defenses, each shutting down the other’s high-powered offensive attacks.

The Bucs were able to capitalize on some Lawrenceville mistakes in the kicking game in the first half. These mistakes led to 9 points resulting from a blocked punt (Jr. Brad Weiss) recovered in the end zone for a touchdown (Sr. Anthony Melillo), and another botched punt in which Sr. John Kane tackled the punter for a safety. Blair’s stingy defense also set up their first score with an interception by Sr. Mike Gallihugh in Lawrenceville’s territory. The Buc’s offense then used its pounding running game to go 35 yards and cap the scoring drive with a 1-yard run by Jr. quarterback Rich Doyle.

In the second half, Lawrenceville gained some momentum as it put together a long scoring drive of its own, making the score 16-6 by the end of the 3rd quarter. Both teams continued to play hard-nosed football the rest of the way with neither team getting inside the other’s 30 yard line. The win puts the Bucs in the lead for the MAPL championship race with two league games remaining.

Blair had several players with big days, but it was the defense that stole the show. The Bucs were led by Sr. Anthony Melillo who had 4 sacks, a blocked punt and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Seniors Derek Ashmore, Zach Hammond and Jeff Hanson, Jr. Ben Kinerson and So. Leo Bonisese along with Melillo supplied the pressure up front while linebackers John Kane - Sr., Kevin Reese - Sr. and Stewart Buck - Jr. and defensive backs Mike Gallihugh - Sr., Emmanuel Bello - Sr. and Gary Thomas - Sr. shut down the explosive Lawrenceville passing attack.

Blair’s next game is Saturday, 10/25, at home vs. The Hill School at 2:00 pm. It will be another big game for the Bucs with MAPL title implications.
