Blair Faculty Travel the World
Seven Blair faculty members traveled to various parts of Africa this summer, including three teachers of world history Quint Clarke 87, Marty Schmalenberg and Andrew Sykes. Andrew reported on their comings and goings, noting that many of the teachers were able to link up during their time away from the States this summer: Kate [Andrews wife] and I traveled throughout eastern and southern Africa for seven weeks. We began our trip in Zimbabwe, working for an NGO called Hoops 4 Hope, which develops and promotes basketball programs in the slums around Harare. From there, we went to Kenya where we met up with Marty Schmalenberg and Quint. Marty stayed with us for a week or so before going on safari.
Andrew added, Quint, Kate and I then went to Uganda, Rwanda and the Congo together. After that, Kate and I went to Tanzania to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, and Quint and Jay went into Sudan. Quint then met Jason and Eric in Ethiopia. Kyle Mason spent seven weeks in Africa as well.

Faculty members Chris and Katie Greene went on a church-sponsored mission trip to a small beach town on Chinas Yellow Sea to teach at an English camp. The camp was intended to help the students with their conversational English, as many of them read and write English well but have never practiced conversing with a native English speaker. Chris and Katie worked with high school students from a boarding school in Beijing and taught them about such topics as Christmas, Easter, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, sports, weddings and restaurants. They also led music, sports, arts and crafts, conversation hours, skits, and the like, in addition to taking the students on several field trips.
