Blair Wins First Freddy Awards

The Blair Academy Players were awarded two Freddy Awards by the State Theatre in Easton, Pa., on Thursday, May 27, for their production of “42nd Street” presented in February. According to Craig Evans, chair of the performing arts department, the Players, nominated in six categories, tied for the Freddy Award for Outstanding Set Design with William Allen High School (which went on to win Outstanding Production for its show “Crazy for You”) and won the Freddy outright for Outstanding Stage Crew. The Stage Crew Freddy carried with it a $1,000 prize for Technical Achievement given on behalf of area Kiwanis Clubs. The winning of these awards is attributed mostly to Wayne Rasmussen, the technical director for the Academy Players.

The other Freddy nominations were for Outstanding Production by a Smaller School, Best Chorus, Best Lighting Design and Best Production Number for “We’re In the Money.” Jon Kruse ’05 accepted the award for Best Set Design, while Meg Fry ’06 accepted the Freddy for Best Stage Crew. Kruse and Fry performed in the opening and closing numbers of the show along with Todd Lewis ’08 and Sarah Pearson ’06.

The Freddy Awards honor high school musical theatre in the Lehigh Valley region and judged the shows of 26 high schools. They are named after the supposed ghost of the State Theatre who is believed to be that of a former employee. These Freddies were the first taken home by Blair in the competition’s three years of existence.
