A reception was held on Saturday, August 6, for the opening of “A Celebration of Landscapes,” an exhibit of paintings and photographs by members of The Pahaquarry Foundation, in the Romano Gallery of the Armstrong-Hipkins Center for the Arts at Blair Academy. The exhibit runs from August 1-28.
The artwork in this exhibition is for sale. The proceeds help fund the creation of a regional artists’ refuge and study center, as well as the foundation’s art programs.
Several pieces on display are works chosen for the Foundation’s 2006 calendar, which will be available for purchase during the reception.
The “Pahaquarry Paint Out” began in 1997 as a way of publicizing the natural beauty of the former Pahaquarry Township (Warren County, N.J.), which was absorbed into Hardwick Township that year. The event, a daylong outdoor painting session, became so popular with landscape artists that the foundation decided to create a similar daylong photo outing for photographers. Thus the “Pahaquarry Shoot Out” started. These two outdoor events are partially supported by a grant from the Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission.
For the visual artist, the Pahaquarry area is especially rich in the variety of subjects it offers, ranging from still life opportunities to farm scenes and riverscapes. Artists and photographers from New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania have participated in these programs. Members of the New Jersey Water Color Society, Inc., and the New Jersey Society for En Plein Air Artists, as well as the Hillcrest Camera Club and the New Jersey Photography Forum have become “regulars.” The Paint Out is held the first Wednesday in October, and the Shoot Out is a spring event, usually held on the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend.
A curator will be available at the Romano Gallery on Sundays from 2:00-4:00 p.m.; weekday hours are by appointment. Admission is free of charge. Please call (908) 841-9530 for further information.
