Dave Vachris Honored for Years of Coaching
During the sports awards assembly on May 23, David Vachris, history teacher and dean of residential life, was honored for his many years of coaching at Blair. Director of Athletics Jim Stone had to this to say about Dave’s fine work:
“In 1997 Blair established a tradition to honor coaches who are moving on and have coached at Blair for five or more years. This year we have one coach who has committed himself to Blair athletes for 12 years.
Since he arrived, he has been coaching lacrosse and basketball. In lacrosse, he was an assistant varsity coach and then became our head coach for the varsity team for three years. As his family grew he took over the JV team with daughter Madison at his side. In basketball, he has contributed to many of the hoop programs but is best known as the leader of the fearless freshmen.
Whatever the team, he dedicated himself to those athletes every day to help them learn about the sport and to be competitive. He loved working with you guys and he cares so much. He has done a tremendous job for Blair athletics, and he will be sorely missed around here. You think of him as “Mr. Activities.” I think of him as “Mr. Blair.”
He and his family – Amy, Madison, Taylor and Gunnar – are off to the Greenvale School in Long Island, where he will be the Head of the Upper School. We wish them all the best. Thanks for all your work, Coach. Here’s to Dave Vachris.”
