Blair Contingent Hears Speech by Dalai Lama

History teacher Quint Clarke ’87 reports that on September 25, he and seven Blair students traveled to Rutgers University to hear Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, speak on “Peace, War and Reconciliation.” Tessa Rubel ’08, Eli West ’09, Alison Crevi ’09, Quinn Scher ’09, Kara Liebowitz ’09, Kathy Kim ’09 and Deanna Dong ’09 were part of the estimated crowd of 40,000 spectators inside Rutgers Stadium.

“It was an amazing experience to hear him speak so simply and with such humor on compassion and peace,” said Eli. “We all felt inspired afterwards.” The winner of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize, the Dalai Lama has spent the last 45 years in exile from his native Tibet following the Communist Chinese invasion. During this time he has spoken extensively and written over 30 books expressing his Buddhist view of the world. Mayor Michael Bloomberg calls him one of the greatest spiritual leaders of our time. Also present at the lecture were past and present members of the Blair community, including Stephen and Judith Kampmann, Rita Baragona, Sue Habermann and Meredith Habermann ’04.

Rita Baragona, chair of the fine arts department, made sketches and notes on her program while listening to a speech by the Dalai Lama in Rutgers Stadium.
